Four Topeka-Area Teachers Receive Horizon Awards for First-Year Educators by Linda Ditch.

Garret Platt  was one of thirty-two winners of the Horizon Award in the State of  Kansas. The Horizon Award recognizes first-year teachers whose performance sets them apart from their peers. Seaman Middle School teacher Garret Platt teaches introduction to Industrial Technology, Project Lead the Way Automation and Robotics, as well as an enrichment class in Viking Store Productions.

“Mr. Platt creates learning connections with students through his classroom projects,” said Danira Fernandez-Flores, director of secondary education. “For instance, students are able to see the importance of mathematics as they determine the quantities of materials needed for their projects.” Seaman Middle School Principal Annie Diederich said Platt’s colleagues say he does a wonderful job using his ability to relate to and build relationships with students to motivate and inspire them both academically and socially. “Garret is a reflective teacher with a ‘can-do’ philosophy,” Diederich said.
